The 1st Annual May Day "Drop & Drive" Date

Knock, knock, knock!

My heartbeat raced as I dodge shrubbery, cats, and other things that get in the way while trying to make a hasty getaway.

I hope they don't see me, I hope they don't see me! The bottoms of my feet burned as they hit the gravel, but my mind was set. I was running, whether it hurt or not.

I had just dropped off the fourth May Day basket (or in this case, jar of flowers)on the porch of my friends house. All the windows were open, as was the door, which made this escape more instense than the last few. I heard my friend shriek when I knocked, which made my adrenaline start flowing sooner than I expected. I ran in a crouched position to avoid being seen from the big picture window that could be my demise. Then, without warning, I approached a 4 foot drop from the yard to the below ground driveway. No time to hesistate. My bare feet felt the sting of the landing, but I was determined to flee unseen. I made my way through the park in their backyard and finally halfway up the hill to the car. My legs wobbled. Secure with the thought that they would never think to look my direction, I slowed to an unsteady walk. Jim waited for me in the getaway car. When I flung myself into the passenger seat and said "go, go, go," I realized I had to wait about 3 seconds between each "go" to breathe. I'm either too old for this, or way out of shape. Probably both. It might take her reading this blog post to know that is was I who left her that May Day Basket, but Stacy will most likely never read this and will therefore, always wonder who in the world left a jar of flowers on her front porch that May 1, 2008.

At the beginning of our adventure, when we weren't as sneaky (I was wearing slippers that were impossible to run in) and more careless, I think we were spotted by one unamed Receiver of the Gift. But, still, I think our knocking and running clunk, clunk, clunk down the stairs stunned them enough to give us a little time. It was at this point I decided to make the rest of my deliveries barefoot.

On another drop-off we were investigated by the father/father-in-law of those two (who are neighbors and sisters-in-law) left with the anonymous gift. This was the most humorous - the look on his face was pricless. I ducked down to avoid being seen as we drove by. Thankfully, it was dark enough that our headlights would have deterred his vision.

Our very last drop-off made for the best climax of the whole night. We drove by to investigate our escape method. It seemed simple. Jim would park about 50 yards away, behind a pole and a mailbox. I worried that there were few options for my escape route. A hedge blocked the driveway on one side, a fence on the other. I would have to drop off the jar, knock and run down the long driveway in hopes that my friend wouldn't see me from her kitchen window. Knock, knock, knock! I ran. Fast. The hedge, all of a sudden, was no more an obstacle. My instinct took me right through the bushes and I ran like a mad woman to the car. Jim laughed at me when I got in the car. "That was awesome!" he said as he drove off.

"What do you mean?" I asked, gasping for breath.

"You went right through the bushes! That was a great idea. You had this smile on your face the whole time!"

"I did?" I asked "I wasn't thinking about it being fun. I was thinking about escaping without being seen. Maybe it's fun to escape without being seen, and that's why I was smiling."

"Do you think she heard you knock?" Jim asked, looking into his rear-veiw mirror.

"I hope so. I think I rang the doorbell, too. But, I can't remember." I said, still trying to catch my breath. "Let's....go....back and see." I said. "It's dark enough that we won't look suspicious."

Jim circled the block and we turned onto the road in front of my friends house. A red mini-van was in front of us. "Oh, good." I said. "There's traffic, so we'll look less suspicious."

Just then, the red mini-van pulled into my friends driveway and it hit me, "That's her parent's van!" We drove by the house. The jar was gone. "That's too hilarious!" I laughed and Jim and I exchanged a high-five. "We just missed 'em! I feel like those guys on that show 'It Takes a Thief!' Except we're not theiving, we're giving!"

"We should do this every year." Jim suggested, and thus, our 1st Annual May Day "Drop & Drive" Date.

"For lo, the winter is past, the rain is over and gone.
The flowers appear on the earth; the time of singing has come..."
Song of Solomon 2:11-12

That sounds like so much fun! I used to love giving out baskets to my neighbors when I was little. Jim sounds fun...I wish Paul would indulge my "wacky" side a bit more...oh well...that's what kids are for! :-D
